Don't say you understand because you probably don't

Empathy is not an easy thing as life is complex and there are so many ways to look at things. What may seem clearly black or white is almost always shades of grey.

Hence who are we to judge as our view of the world is from where we stand. Until you have really walked in the shoes of the other party, you are likely to make decisions, comments, judgements from your life and what you have experienced.

Everyone will tell you things from how they see it. Consciously or unconciously, important facts are left out and hence your conclusions will likely be wrong.

So what can one do if a friend has a problem or when you are asked an opinion? Try not to give answers. Instead ask more questions or just be there to listen. It may seem like one is trying to help of feel like they know something about the matter, but chances are the matters are totally different. So shut up and you'll probably do better.

It is difficult. Especially for those who think they know it all. Today, I experienced the Socrates quote ie all I know is that I know nothing.
